Watch The Last Samurai: In the 1870s, Captain Nathan Algren, a cynical veteran of the American Civil war who will work for anyone, is hired by Americans who want lucrative contracts with the Emperor of Japan to train the peasant conscripts for the first standing imperial army in modern warfare using firearms. The imperial Omura cabinet's first priority is to repress a rebellion of traditionalist Samurai -hereditary warriors- who remain devoted to the sacred dynasty but reject the Westernizing policy and even refuse firearms. Yet when his ill-prepared superior force sets out too soon, their panic allows the sword-wielding samurai to crush them. Badly wounded Algren's courageous stand makes the samurai leader...

This is an amazing film, but is it too much to ask for a version that has english subtitles when they speak japanese? There's 5 minute scenes in japanese that I know for a fact have subtitels, but for some reason these versions don't have it! Hardly a DVD rip then...

-Typical Hollywood star who just won't die. Tom Cruise gets fired at by thousands of trained riflemen, miraculously survives unscathed, gets hit multiple times by high caliber Gatling guns. All his samurai friends are dead. We see him limping a bit after all that. -Exotification of Asian culture: I find this especially hard to stomach. It's all just pure Hollywood garbage. The orient is seen as some mystical paradise blah blah blah. And the way the Japanese love interest was portrayed as some lustful erotic character. And the fact that she ends up kissing the white man who murdered her husband? That's not only culturally insensitive but just bad film making. Imagine an American western in which a Japanese man kills a renowned honorable Sheriff and has sex a few weeks later with his wife. -Just a typical big budget Hollywood movie, everything was predictable, nothing was very interesting. It was bland and run of the mill. -Absolutely god awful ending. Did they really need to make this like every other sh!tty Hollywood blockbuster? Did they? Of course they did. Nature knows no indecencies; man invents them. Mark Twain (1835-1910)

This movie, although slow at points was very well done. I think this is one of Tom Cruise's best performances and the story was well written. Above anything else, this is a memorable movie that will always be a favorite for me

Great movie. It's a pity there were no subtitles though. And of course as usual with Hollywood movies, the hero had to be american. In reality, although the US had a large role later on in the westernization of Japan, it was the french who helped modernize the japanese army in the beginning of the Meiji Era (Captain Algren is inspired by Captain Jules Brunet and in the late 1880's Emile Bertin, french naval engineer, created the japanese navy). The history was largely simplified as in reality, Captain Brunet was not made prisoner but chose to fight with the shogun's army because France had signed a treaty with him before the shogun resigned and passed the power to the emperor. Despite all the inaccuracies, it remains a great movie about the way of the samurai and the golden age of Japan.

great movie but like others have said a bit pointless not having subtitles in a movies where half the dialogue is in a foreign language (i wish i could speak Japanese). I thought the original release had subtitles hard copied on it anyway so I don't understand how or why they've been completely removed. If any of the uploaders know how to add them that would be great. Either way much appreciation.
