I remember this movie when it came out,I learned something, you can watch a movie with historical context and judge with modern eyes,we have to take ourselves back to the time the story takes place. This movie was considered quite controversial for its time, but it was not a popular movie and even blacklisted for a while and thought of as sleasy.I like the movie and all the characters,it shows the blacks were not the only slaves, the whites were slaves to a system that perpetuated itself from one generation to the next.At first I did not like the Blanche character played by Susan George, but as the movie progressed I found myself feeling sorry for her and could understand the actions she took to get her husbands attentions, again looking at it with modern eyes, yes there's cruelty in this movie, yet its done within the context of the movie simply stating this is the way it was, good or bad,its not for me to judge what happened 200 yrs back,I don't have to approve of it,but those were the times and things were seen with different eyes.

- technically, there are no races. There arent enough genetic differences between black, white, asian (etc) people to divide them into races. So we were always in one big pot, but we, as a people, put our own divides according to what we see. - and I dont see why bein "American" (assuming you are speaking of the US only) is relevant in any way, the usae is to this day one of the countries that oppressed its black people, as well as other minorities, the most. You have been brainwashed to think the opposite...

I was 5 when this movie came out. I always heard about this movie, but it was always in derogitory ways with tasteless jokes behind it. And at the sweet age of 41, I finally watched it. Great movie and worth the watch.

As I look upon this movie after first seeing it 20 years ago, I see it as an adult realizing how cruel and unjust America was historically. Slavery and the corrupt thinking associated with it should never be tolerated. We are one planet, our DNA although unique makes us all brothers and sisters born on this spinning rock in space.
