I was pulled in by the slowness and quiet reflection of it. The flat dry humor was well placed and Sean hit it perfectly! At first I thought...what drugs is this guy on... LOL then after a short time without realizing it...you knew without alot of words what was truely going on within him. His monotone and un-expression became the story. Kudos...welldone! Happy I took the time to watch this. Wasnt sure

Ozzy meets Michael Jackson dressed as The Cure. I love the dry humour, the music and the story. The acting was seriously good! Reminds me of "About Schmidt" 9/10

Awwwe C'mon now This was okay-i could barely hear what everyone was saying though-His character reminds me of a cross between Edward Scissorhands and Sam in the movie "I am Sam" - a grown man who still acts like a child.. and.. I DOUBT that Sean Penn EVER really takes himself seriously! anyway!

From new wave Italian director Paolo Sorrentino( IL DIVO,THE FAMILY FRIEND...)this exceptional movie offers one of the best Sean Penn performance of his outstanding career....a must watch,5/5.

I really enjoyed this slow but well-paced film that focuses on the pain an almost child-like aging rock star deals with over the estrangement from his father. Some fabulous cinemaphotography and well directed, I will be looking for more from Paolo Sorrentino. A bonus too was the cameo by David Byrne playing himself. A solid 4.5/5 and faved.

Johnny Depp should have play the main character, he's more fitted for it, however, Sean Penn nailed it very well.

the acting was great, which is to be expected with this kinda star power in the main roles, the movie did kinda lose me when the whole lets look for Nazis thing started, this is a good movie, but could have been a GREAT movie if it would have focused more on the main role (penn) and how he got to where he was...just IMO 4/5

I agree with tatiana155, but I don't think the story moves too slowly, it is kind of aimless. The entire situation of Sean Penn seeking a villain from his father's childhood feels useless. There are many memorable pieces of cinematography -- this director obviously LOVES using tracks and cranes to achieve them. It is just too loose and feels like you're waiting for the story.
