Does anyone else think that Piven is just playing Ari Gold but in the U.K in the 1920's?

I can only agree with your comment. I watched both episodes and Piven doesn't improve. In fact, he appears drunk in several scenes. All the smiling and arm waving reminds me of community theater, when an actor doesn't know what else to do. Piven is much better as a neurotic and sweaty 20th Century con, because that is who he usually plays and may be who he is; but he has no idea how to create a character and in this production he's surrounded by actors who have been painstaking in doing so. This series appears to be a chiffon cake with a booger on top.

Thank you for the upload! Besides the great shops all over London there are 2 department stores that I love and enjoy purchasing stuff from Harrods Knightsbridge and Selfridge's, London's department stores. If you ever have the chance to go to London you must experience the quality of service and merchandise. For the kid in you go to Hamleys toys and happy times to you all!

Great episode. Very cool to see the suffragettes.

So far I have enjoyed the show. While it is similar in many aspects to The Paradise, which I adore, it has far more dis-similar aspects. Selfridge is married, an American, and seems almost bipolar. I think his character is good, he lives on his highs and his fears paralize him for a second, then he develops an idea and just runs fearlessly with it. The supporting cast is near perfection too, especially his wife who is so ''proper'' in the beginning but is now developing a bit of her own ideas...can't say more or it would be a spoiler. I have only watched the first 3 episodes at this point, and am anxious to see how this develops. 4/5

Jeremy Piven is amazing in anything he touches. Awesome talent for bringing characters satire side to life.

excellent episode, one of the best so far. I have always been a fan of JP, and his performance in tonight's episode is superb, it shows his true range of emotions and skills. This wonderful series continues to get better and better, I am so thankful for my friend who recommended it to me, because if you love period drama, you are sure to love this one. 5/5.

Just read that this show debuted in Britain with the biggest audience ever 7.6 million, and the numbers fell to under 2 million by the second and third weeks.

Great episode, and while yes it has similarities to Paradise, it is totally different with respect to the underlying storyline. Each has its own charm and adventures and possible story developments. I enjoy this one as much as Paradise. 4/5

Like many shows of the same type, it shows the difference in the Americas and the UK without explaining anything. As a result, Selfridge comes off as a maniac and the Brits come off as backwards bumpkins that couldn't sell candles in a blackout. Costuming is amazing, but completely misses the mark in a few places. In episode 8 Mrs. Selfridge looks like she's wearing a white lace bra with a white lace shirt over it due to modern posturing habits and the angle she was filmed in. While it was an interesting modern look, it completely distracted from the scene. Love, love, LOVE the patron-lady. (Miss Love?) But the viewers are supposed to see her as the unattainable high-class goddess and she hasn't done much except tease a couple of men about money and wandered about in giant hats. There could be so much more to this!!

He smiles and waves his arms a lot more, but it's the "same clown, different circus"

I feel like this guy is going to come crashing down, in the next couple of episodes. His energy looks almost like bi-polar disorder! Especially after the actress getting keys!

love this show cant wait for next week

I completely agree with the other reviewers. The lead was mis-cast with Piven which pulls down an otherwise wonderful show. In the very first scene he did the Ari Gold stick out face, raise eyebrow, and make gesture which completely turned me off. I would have much rather seen a brand-new actor in the role.

perfect little show to enjoy after a hard day

For all the money they have obviously poured into this production, it lacks pathos! Piven is wooden and his character lacks the ability to pull me in so I care whether he succeeds or not. The writers need to develop his character so he has more depth. I might watch episode 2, but I doubt it.

great episode, wonderful acting, and a most unexpected treat - ''Death of the Swan'' not the total dance, but what was shown was beautiful. As it is my most favorite dance piece of all time, I so enjoyed it, and totally agreed with what Mrs. Selfridge said - but I shall not say more as I do not want to add any spoilers. This is one of the best episodes yet, and it has opened the door to a whole lot of new excitement - turmoil - and upheval; next week should be magnificent. I am hooked on this show. 5/5 for this episode.

I was blown away by this episode. The character development is truly outstanding.

When I watch this, I can't help but think of Piven as the supermarket cashier in Singles.

Thumbs UP. Piven seems like a community player among seasoned actors, his character doesn't exist off camera -- he enters from nowhere and exits to the same oblivion. In addition, he doesn't begin to resemble Selfridge physically, who was a retail expert after having worked his way up the ladder in Marshall Fields.

great episode, wonderful directing on this one, the story line showed the competitive nature that is truly Mr Selfridges charecter. This show is superior with its costumes, designs, sets, and writing, and one of my favorites. Not replacing Paradise mind you, but I do enjoy this one almost as well 4.5/5, at the time of this posting -Version 1 -sockshare worked very well; but we all know that is subject to change.

A great pilot to a very promising show. It is so interesting to see Jeremy Piven in a period drama. He brings such charisma to the title character. Great supporting cast with a lot of intriguing possibilities of where to take the storyline. Looking forward to the next episode!
