9/10 - this was i think my first introduction to manga animation. And it was completly different to any thing i had seen before. Have the DVD now and having watched it numerous times, i just love the neo-apocolyptic view of tokto. All the anarchy and plotical going ons. The animation is just top notch with a great soundtrack to boot.

A masterpiece, enough said.

OMG! this is definitely the worst and most weird animation I have seen SO FAR! Extremely confusing too. Don't see why it's so special and GREAT for most of the people... 3/10

JUST PLAIN BAD!!!!

Beautifully detailed and colorful. Interesting story but a tad long. A must watch whether you are into Japanimation or not. You may have to view it twice to absorb everything going on. Enjoy your popcorn.

I recommend Elfen Lied for fans of Akira.

For those that are Fans of the show Bleach, the guy that does Ichigo Kurusaki's english dubbed voice in Bleach is the same guy that did the english dubbed voice for the main character in THIS movie, the guy who rides the Red bike ( sorry can't remember his name but if you have seen this you know who i am reffering too, thought that was pretty cool and wanted to point that out lol :P I am 20 mins into this movie, watching it for the first time and it has me hooked already..For an older animation style movie ( very similar to Dragonball type animation in their faces) this is really well done. Will post my rating after i have watched the entire movie :)

First time I saw it I didn't really like it. First half was pretty good, while at the other part it became too much for me to like. Now that I've seen it for the second time I really enjoyed it a lot! While the animation is next to perfect for an anime, the story is, while very weird, very interesting. Best of all is the action which never stops. 7/10

If not the best anime movie so far, it certainly is the most popular and well known of them. You don't need a comment for this movie, you just need two hours and a comfortable seat :D 10/10

awesome animation, i was in italy when i watched it so i had to read the subtitles in italian wich i dont understand very well but still 10/10 this is probably on my top 3 animations, behind fire and ice of course =)

I really do not get it how so many ppl can be cool with this one. I love anime, and I ve been raised by those. I hate this movie. I think it is one of the lamest piece of junk I ever had the curse to watch. Maybe it was a different story back then. I mean, the drawings are beautifully done but I think that the whole movie is a waste of human energy. Compared to this, watching the grass grow make me go ecstatic. I cannot even think what good ppl could ever find in this. Read the comments, they only wrote "cool" "this is it". I wish I had my lsd cube when I saw this one. I think it is just frigging unbearable.

Great anime

OK I'm probably gonna get hated on for this but it NEEDS to be said: You remember your first time getting lucky? You thought that was the best experience of your life and at that point, it was. But then you grew up a little bit, got around the block a time or two and you realize that first time... wasn't really that great; it just SEEMED that way because you had nothing to compare it to. That's Akira. Sure, it still looks pretty good. And considering that it's over 20 years old, that's saying quite a lot about the quality of the animation. Yeah, the original english-dubbed version is way better, but even that didn't make or break this movie. The one glaring flaw in this movie is the script, or to be more precise: the plot. This one is TERRIBLE. Sure, I'll give props to the fact that the rest of the world would've never discovered anime w/o this movie, but bringing a sense of nostalgia shouldn't confuse it with being good. Being the first, doesn't necessarily make you the best.

I didn't realise until reading some of the comments after watching it that this movie is nearly a quarter of a century old !!! The animation is good and the story is worthy of being placed alongside Kubrick's "2001" ... way ahead of it's time. 9/10
